Liberty Science Center (LSC) is an interactive science museum and learning center located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey first opened in 1993.
During the summer of 2007 the facility reopened its doors after a 22 month, $109 million expansion. The Ferreria Group and Noveda Technologies™
(www.noveda.com)
partnered in their vision to create a greener environment by reducing the museum’s carbon footprint.
The building was designed with many green features including extensive day lighting for the office spaces and a 6000
ft. green roof that reduces runoff and provides extra insulation and wildlife habitat. Also installed were two PV arrays. When staff at LSC originally learned about the Noveda Technology developed for Ferreira Group’s corporate headquarters at 31 Tannery
Road in Branchburg, NJ (the first net-zero electric commercial building in the
country), they were excited at the prospect of tracking the production of electricity from the 105 and 122 Kw PV arrays mounted on the building in real time and engaged The Ferreira Group to implement the technology. They soon realized that there is much more available than showing guests the amount of electricity the solar system is generating. In fact, the real excitement is on the consumption side.
"We're looking at savings in the range of
25 - 28% of our electric bill," says Dennis Hercel, Director of Facilities for Liberty Science Center. "For a not-for-profit, or anyone really, that is a significant amount to save each month."
What started as an exploration of content for new educational programs turned into something much more. Liberty Science Center's engineers have been able to identify and eliminate excess loads from the building using Noveda's visualization tools and are in the process of engaging The Ferreira Group to develop an energy program to drive down the museum’s consumption and measure it in real time using the Noveda Technology. |
